James L. Davis, 78, Reading, died Aug. 1 at 3:32 a.m. in St. Joseph Medical Center. He was the husband of Margaret I. (Bilger) Davis, Sinking Spring.
Davis was born in Natural Bridge, Va., on Nov. 5, 1927.
He was employed for 10 years as a truck driver by Delaware Valley of Leesport, retiring in 1995.
Davis was a graduate of Natural Bridge High School.
He was a member of Spring Valley Church of God, Muhlenberg Township.
Davis served in the Navy in World War II.
He also is survived by three sons: Robert L. Davis, Douglassville; George A. Kerns Jr., Reading; and Dennis L. Kerns, Sr., Reading; and two daughters, Sandra L. (Leib) Heckman, Sinking Spring, and Sharon A. Kerns, Reading.
Other survivors include three sisters: Ellene (Thomas) Greeson, Delta, Ala.; Verlie (Thomas) Callahan, Lynchburg, Va.; and Lucy (Thomas) Turpin, Lexington, Va.
There also are 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Davis was predeceased by a daughter, Karen L. (Kerns) Garcia, on May 26.
Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Whelan-Schwartz Funeral Home Inc., 444 N. Ninth St., Reading, with the Rev. Robert E. Hinson officiating. Friends may call from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.
