Howard Smith

January 6, 1910 — April 5, 2009

Howard A. Smith, 99, of Shillington, passed away Sunday, April 5th, 2009 at 5:50 a.m. at Spruce Manor, West Reading, where he had been a patient for three years and ten months.

Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late James Smith and Clara (Mayers) Smith.

He was the husband of Elizabeth R. (Frank) Smith a home. The couple were married on July 30th, 1940, and shared 68 wonderful years of marriage.

He was a 1927 graduate of Pottsville High School, where he grew up.

He worked for the Reading Company for 46 years as the Philadelphia Office Manager of the Real Estate Department, retiring in 1975. He was an avid golfer.

He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Reading, where he was a past member of Church Council.

He was a member of the Central Berks Lions for many years, serving as Secretary from 1950-1988. He was also a past president from 1955-56, Zone Chairman from 1956-57. He was also voted Lion of the Year from 1979-80, and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest award given by Lions International for his work in Lionism. In 2005, he received a 55 year award from the Lions.

He was a life member of the Central Berks Fire Co. in Centerport, the Goodwill Hose Co. in Pottsville, and the 6 County Fireman's Association.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons: Howard A. Jr. of Cleveland Heights, OH, and James W. of Lincoln Park.

There are also three granddaughters: Andrea, Megan, and Cassia; and four great grandchildren: Carter, Amelia, Evan, and Hayden.

In addition to his parents, he is pre deceased by brothers: John, Robert, Will, and Walter; and a sister: Dorothy (Smith) Weiss.

Services Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. from the Whelan Schwartz Funeral Home, 444 N. 9th St., Reading. Rev. Rebecca W. Knox officiating. Entombment in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends received Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
