Gerard Raymond McCarthy, affectionately known as Rod to his beloved wife, family, and friends, peacefully passed away on June 21, 2024, at his home surrounded by his devoted family.
Rod was born in 1940 in Schuylkill Haven, PA, to the late Gerard and Dorothy McCarthy. He attended Schuylkill Haven High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business from Villanova University. Rod proudly served his country in the Army Reserves and held a deep-seated patriotism throughout his life.
Rod was a dedicated employee at Wyeth Pharmaceutical Company for 40 years, where he excelled as the Director of International Purchasing. It was there that he met the love of his life, Gloria Jean, with whom he shared 61 years of cherished marriage.
Rod had a passion for woodworking, creating beautiful furniture, birdhouses, and holiday decorations that he joyfully shared with his family and friends. He was an enthusiastic host, delighting in entertaining neighbors and loved ones with warmth and hospitality. An avid runner well into his late 70s, Rod was known for his endurance, having completed hundreds of 5 and 10K races and several marathons. He continued his active lifestyle by walking daily with Gloria, whom he adored and cherished as his lifelong companion.
Rod had a deep appreciation for early rock and roll music, particularly enjoying the tunes of Elvis Presley. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, attending all sporting events and extracurricular activities to support his family. Rod was also an advocate for father’s rights, advocating passionately for family values and parental involvement.
Rod is survived by his loving wife, Gloria Jean McCarthy; his brother Bryan (Debbie); his son Mark (Linda); his daughter Christa (Steve); grandsons Kevin (Amanda), Steven (Gia), and Alan (Marissa); and great-grandchildren Tessa, Seneca, Isabella, August, and Vincent. He will be remembered for his boundless love, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. His legacy of warmth, kindness, and dedication to those he loved will continue to inspire all who knew him.
The family will receive relatives and friends to celebrate Rod's life at Parkesburg United Methodist Church, 411 Main St. on Thursday July 11th from 10:00am to 11:00am with service to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Jude’s Cancer Research Center, a cause that was close to Rod's heart. Online condolences may be made to www.whelanschwartz.com.
